Before Pleasanton was established, the area where the city now sits was called Alisal. During the California Gold Rush, Alisal was home to many of the area's desperados and bandits. The city of Pleasanton was founded by John W. Kottinger and incorporated in 1894; it was originally named "Pleasonton," but a Postal Service error led to the city's current spelling.

Pleasanton served as the setting for the 1917 movie Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, while the current day Castlewood Country Club sits on the original estate of Phoebe Apperson Hearst. Dubbed fourth out of "America's 50 best cities to live in" in 2014 by USA Today, Pleasanton is also known as one of "Americans' Top Hometown Spots."
